MEDIA RELEASE 03rd April 2017

Electoral Commissioner Patilias Gamato has clarified the confusion surrounding the total number of writs that will be issued for the 2017 National Election, which the Governor General will sign on April 20, 2017.

He was responding to a completely misleading and confusing front page report by the Post Courier newspaper on Friday March 31, 2017 that  the Governor General was signing 666 writs.

“When I briefed the Governor General, I said that the vice regal will sign and issue 111 writs for the 111 seats in Parliament.”

“These seats include 22 Provincial seats and 89 Open, which is a total of 111,” Mr. Gamato clarified.

He explained that six copies of the 111 writs will be made and will be distributed to other relevant constitutional offices including Clerk of Parliament, Ombudsman Commission, Registrar of Political Parties and Electoral Commission which will keep three copies.

“Some Christian churches and ministries have held the view that the Governor General was signing up the country for 666, the devils number in the Book of Revelation.”

“We are a Christian country and we will uphold Christian principles and do the right things to honor God.”

“Such views are too shallow and are rejected outright.”
